In 1918, Timberland founder Nathan Swartz began his shoe-making career in Boston, Massachusetts at the Abington Shoe Company as an apprentice stitcher. By 1955 Nathan bought the Company and welcomed his sons into the company, manufacturing private label shoes for leading brand manufacturers for almost 10 years. Finally in 1973, The Swartz family developed the Timberland® brand name and Timberland created its first guaranteed waterproof classic 6-inch boot which it became world famous for.
