Pendleton
Pendleton was established over 100 years ago by a young English weaver, Thomas Kay who had the dream of raising his own sheep and producing his own wool. With no suitable land nearby, Kay set sail up the Pacific Coast in search of a location and after months at sea, he set-up shop in Oregan. Kay then built his own family-operated mill, teaching and passing on his skills. Since 1909, Pendleton has produced blankets, robes and shawls for Indigenous tribes and is still connected closely to the Native American population. Pendleton designers take extra care to study traditions, mythologies and design preferences of Indigenous communities and even spend time with local tribes to recognise design and colour preferences. Pendleton’s modern technology allows a much greater attention to detail than conventional weaving techniques and creates more vivid colours.
